Since you will be watching disjointed clips or sections of this Sherlock episode, here’s a short outline of the story arc, so you can see how they fit together:
- In 21st-century London, Irene Adler is a successful dominatrix known as “the Woman.” She provides domination services to powerful male and female clients. She records their encounters and/or takes pictures of them on her “camera phone."
- Consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and doctor/blogger John Watson are tasked with bringing in this camera phone because there are compromising images of a “young female person” in the British monarchy on it.
- In order to gain admittance to Irene’s home, Sherlock has Watson beat him up and then pretends to be a mugged vicar—but Irene is on to this disguise before he even arrives.
- Despite the fact that both American agents and Sherlock are trying to get the phone, Irene is able to recover it from them. Afterwards, Irene and Sherlock meet several times in person and she sends him flirtatious texts throughout the episode.
- Fearing for her life, she eventually gives the phone to Sherlock and disappears. Unable to break into Irene’s phone once it is recovered, the British government strikes a deal with Irene (who has reappeared and is working for Holmes’s arch-enemy, James Moriarty) for access the contents of her phone.
