Student Response to DickinsonJ636 - “The Way I read a Letter's -- this --” by Emily Dickinson The Way I read her Poem’s--this-- ‘Tis first -- I am befuddled-- And I look at the precise Words--and rhymes For there are dashes I’m sure And then I look at the stanzas of four Which has Lines of four too-- Then I ask, who or what is she hiding from? Intimate, secret is the letter from--her boo? She is glaring (staring)-- at everything She seems filled with--anxiety-- Then--Desire to read the letter in--secret What’s in the--Letter? I am with--Curiosity Like how I read the letters my friend sends But not intimately, as if we were a--couple She addresses someone at the end Like in “She sights a bird--she chuckles”-- Peruse at how confused (amused)-- I am--like everyone else--you know-- And sigh for lack of understanding-- Not for understanding of context--though But for her use of random--capitalization And punctuation, or lack thereof-- The unusual language, the narration-- Someday--I’ll understand all of her stuff-- ~Anonymous ENL 3 student |
